I first met Bill when I was about 15 and living in Cayuga. Bill, Peter Abbott, Paul DiMaggio, Roger Cocking and Jamie Abbott were all my close friends as a teenager. I missed them all a lot after I went back to England in 1967. Bill introduced me to jazz and I got us tickets to see the Brubeck quartet at Stratford. I next saw Bill in 1973, but not again until about 12 years ago, at Roger's place, and later in Port Stanley, with Gillian. I hoped to see him again when I was back in Ontario this year. So long, Bill, it was great to know you.

My sincere condolences to the family. It was with great sadness I heard of his passing. He was a terrific teacher and had huge impact on me pursuing my own teaching degree. He always encouraged students to expand their views, vocabulary usage, and look at obstacles in our lives as things to overcome, and not something to succumb to. He taught me my love for writing, and the long short story, or the annual poetry anthologies have left lasting memories. You were a great promoter of thinking outside of the box and looking at things with a different lens. Thanks for all your life lessons.

My memories of Bill were always entertaining. We talked a lot about on going community issues. But we really enjoyed Bill at the Cramalott inn. Once he had a couple drinks of wine, he would proceed to teach us how to say his favourite wine. Sangiovese. Of course we were all drinking and it was not easy to teach anyone anything. But he persisted every chance he got which led to a-lot of laughter at our blunders. I only know how to say this wine due to Bills persistence. We had lots of laughs at the local watering hole.

Mr. Allen was the greatest teacher I have ever had. I remember him like yesterday from Sparta Public school. I enjoyed science so we spent quite a bit of time talking. He was always patient, and his smile was contagious. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. I will always hold Mr. Allen very close to my heart. With sympathy, Michelle Manchester

Bill's daughter Jess here. I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for your warm words and especially your wonderful memories. They've provided us with a great deal of comfort.
Don't hesitate to join us this summer in Sparta to celebrate Bill together and in person. On Saturday, August 9 between 1-4pm we will gather at the Sparta Community Hall. At 3pm, we will raise a glass to Bill, a gesture he himself thought would be a lovely tribute.

Most of us have that one teacher who made such a positive impact on our childhood, and ultimately our lives, that they will always be with us. Bill Allen was that teacher for many of us. He made learning interesting and fun in the most memorable ways. He challenged us and made us push ourselves to open our minds and expand our horizons. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity years later, to tell him the impact that he had on me and to continue those interesting topics as an adult. Your presence will be missed in the community, but not forgotten.

Bill Allen the teacher had such an impact on my life and learning, I’m not sure I appreciated until now that he affected hundreds of others in much the same way. I guess I thought it was just me. But that was his magic. Always authentic in his passion and curiosity about all things – art, science language, philosophy – he lit that fire in us.
In 1980 I found myself in Mr Allen’s grade 7 class, and suddenly worlds of possibility started to expand in all directions toward ever receding horizons. Whatever interests I had, Bill would feed them and trigger new ones. On one day he might send me home with some reading on atomic physics; on another he’d give me a book of Zen koans to ponder.
Even now I still have my stack of notebooks labeled “Private Writing” where we practiced continuous writing, while Bill played a jazz selection or some experimental soundscape recording for inspiration. I credit these exercises with unlocking a lifelong love of language and writing.
What set Bill apart as a teacher and as a person was the breadth of his interests. He brought the same passion to math, science and technology as to humanities and arts. (I’m happy to own one of his paintings.) As I read his obituary and the many shared anecdotes, this Heinlein quote comes to mind (and yes, I’m pretty sure it was Bill who introduced me to Robert Heinlein):
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
I will certainly raise a glass to this great unspecialized man. My deepest condolences to Jessica and Chris. Thank you for sharing a part of your remarkable father with so many of us.

It was just yesterday I recounted to my wife what a special teacher I had in Grade 7. Now today, I am saddened to learn of his recent passing. Such a common name for such an uncommon teacher. Mr. Allen was a treasure at Sparta Public School. He knew how to push students to their limits, open their minds and inspire them to lifelong learning. I'll never forget the open discussion periods to start each day and the demanding position papers that challenged our young and maturing minds to think critically. He expanded the curriculum in so many interesting and relevant ways. What other Grade 7 teacher in a rural public school would regularly introduce students to topics ranging from existentialism to Middle East politics and invite them to weigh in on the moral and political issues of the day?
My sincerest condolences to the family and closest friends of Mr. Allen. He will be forever missed but his positive impact will carry on in those lucky enough to have been his students.

Mr. Allen is the reason I pursued drums. During science class at Sparta Public School, he would put his lesson on hold and we would watch his VHS tapes of Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Gene Krupa, and many more of the jazz greats. He let me borrow those tapes to take home and I spent hours and hours watching and learning. He truly did inspire people to pursue their interests and dreams, and I’ll forever be grateful to him for lighting that flame and introducing me to the world of drums.
One thing I’ll never forget is when he gave me a ride home from school in his little black Volkswagen. He would make car noises like we were racing an invisible car and I thought it was the funniest thing ever. We laughed and laughed while we “sped” down Sparta Line.
You were an inspiring and truly wonderful person. Thank you for having such a positive impact on my life and the lives of so many.
RIP, Mr. Allen.

So very saddened by this loss. As students, Mr Allen, inspired us, entertained us, and always kept us on our toes. There was never a dull moment in his classroom. I still talk about him borrowing my Lauryn Hill CD after she won the Grammy for album of the year. I hope he liked it as much as I did.

Mr Allen changed what I thought a teacher was supposed to be like. He was so uniquely him, while still teaching us the basics (and not so basics). His rants remain with me to this day, including his love for a Bunn coffee maker. My condolences to his family on the loss of a wonderful man.

What a beautiful obituary for a truly inspiring and creative human being. Mr Allen was hands down one of my most memorable teachers, even if I shared mere months with him. I remember vividly, the walls of stereo equipment behind his desk, watching "The Wall" and Monty Python, making memes (see, ahead in his time), the poetry, and walking with your arms swinging in circles opposite directions and how hard that was to do.
I appreciated his colorful nature, and the colors he showed me as a new city kid in a rural school.

Mr Allen went above and beyond to educate me. His lessons and one on one teaching will stick with me forever, much like my love of ray bradbury ( inspired my Mr Allen) . He gave me a spaghetti sauce recepie and I hope it's still in my mom's drawer in the kitchen.
Mr Allen would often use unconventional methods to teach. One example, we would light things on fire, in the classroom, and see how many kilojueles of energy a dorito contained.
A fond memory cherished by the boys, the allenator.
May you rest in peace, I'll raise a glass to toast a great man later today.

Mr. Allen was my Grade 7 teacher at Sparta and I absolutely loved him. He made learning fun and sometimes he’d just say he didn’t feel like teaching and he’d take us outside. I vividly remember our “non-stop writing book”. He encouraged us to write about anything as long as we wrote non-stop. I am sad to hear of his passing but happy so many people had a chance to know him. RIP Mr. Allen. We’ve lost a good one.
