Antonios and I got to know Don through Exercise with Ingrid where Roberta was a regular as was I. Let's be clear: this was a women's exercise class. Don did not exercise with us. For years, this wonderful group of women would have an annual garlic picking day including spouses. The day would begin with brunch and move on to the farm for picking, braiding, and socializing through the afternoon followed by a pot luck which included most dishes with garlic. Following dinner which was full of fun and laughter, there would be more laughter and fun playing games outdoors which is where you would want to be after mass consumption of garlic. These folks loved garlic or at least tolerated those who indulged in it with gusto. Don was there with his humour and enthusiastic spirit. He was a wealth of stories ... some colourful ... some off colour. I do not recall that he was particularly fond of garlic, but he was particularly fond of people and good times together. We are thankful for the wonderful memories of those times with Don.

Don was one of those rare individuals who, when one looks back on one’s career in the news-gathering business, stands out as not only a truly hard-working, knowledgeable and dedicated newsman but a decent person, too — qualities often difficult to combine in the gritty reality of the job. I regarded him as a friend, someone I was happy to see when our jobs occasionally brought us together, often as competitors for a story.

Don’s Thunder Bay cousins were very saddened at the news of his passing. We all have our memories of Don when we were all young and surrounded by our parents, grandparents and cousins and all the special occasions we had. Bryan and I will always remember the good times and numerous family dinners we had when we moved to Exeter and Don and family were in London. Those were special for me as I was away from home with a young family and the connection was very important with Don, Roberta and the boys. We were all so young then, good memories I will cherish. Thinking of you all, love from Thunder Bay.

Aw Roberta, I am thinking of you and your family. I've attached some pictures from the radio baseball team years, plus one of Don and Barry (Mongo) in a very serious conversation. Wendy Marles
